Power Factor Correction Capacitor Banks
Capacitor Banks more commonly known in the UK as power factor correction banks are designed specifically to reduce energy consumption and power levels by improving the electrical efficiency of a sites electrical load.
Most commercial and industrial loads tend to be “inductive” type loads which are fundamentally inefficient in their operation and are generated by all motor type loads in ventilation systems, air conditioning, compressors, conveyor systems, pumps, process applications and in fact almost all electrical machines with moving parts.
Inductive loads if not corrected by the implementation of a capacitor bank will remain inefficient and consume much more energy than required to carry out the exact same function.
Power Factor Correction is a technology that utilises capacitors in banks to automatically switch capacitor stages onto the electrical supply to remove the undesirable effects on an inductive load and restore the degree of electrical efficiency of power factor closer to 100% efficient.
Typically uncorrected motor loads are around 80% efficient and consume around 25% more energy than loads that are corrected through the installation of a power factor correction capacitor bank.
A Capacitor Bank if sized correctly will reduce the following parameters on a typical business type electricity bill
- Remove reactive power charges & reactive power adjustments
- Reduce availability & capacity charges
- Reduce kw/h losses
- Reduce CCL charges
- Reduce Co2 emissions
- Reduce circuit currents
- Remove a Wattless power charge
In some cases a power factor correction capacitor bank will remove the need for a larger or upgraded electrical supply by releasing kva and amps from an otherwise overloaded supply which would allow additional plant to be installed on to the exact same supply without a major investment.
PES approach energy reduction at the plants source through the use of a number of complimentary energy saving technologies individually suited to a clients energy saving needs which is a more cost effective route to energy reduction.
Most companies will now be aware of the Carbon Reduction Commitment or CRC, a mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme covering all organisations consuming in excess of 6000Mwh per year of electrical power either as a single operating company or as a group, a capacitor bank is one of the ways to help you to reach your target.
With a Power Factor Correction Capacitor Bank installed you can look forward to savings on your monthly electricity bills for many years to come and make great strides towards your companies CRC obligations.
